Not only is Chris Carpenter nearing a return, but Jaime Garcia may have his turn in the rotation moved around to get him more starts at home. Why? Because, oddly, despite the fact that Busch Stadium is more of a hitter-friendly ballpark, Garcia pitches much better at home and gets destroyed on the road, even in pitcher's environments.
The left-hander boasts a 2.63 ERA in 48 frames at home while his ERA balloons to 6.19 in 48 innings away from St. Louis. Garcia has had favorable splits at home since he broke into the league, but this year it's getting ridiculous.
He's slated to go Saturday in L.A. versus the Dodgers and then the following Friday versus the Cubs. Joe Strauss tweets Wednesday that Garcia will make that start. The Cardinals do not have a day off until the 17th so their options are limited. Shelby Miller could make a spot start, allowing Garcia to sit out an extra few days until the club hosts the Astros September 18-20, but it appears the Cards may only be able to get Garcia one more start at home than is already scheduled.
General manager John Mozeliak says the club is still deciding whether or not Garcia stays on rotation. Miller and Trevor Rosenthal are options mentioned by B.J. Rains of FOXSportsMidwest.com.
The postseason rotation setup will be interesting should the Cardinals hang on and clinch a berth. Will Garcia's turn be scheduled for Busch Stadium, even if it's not until Game 3?
