The hip injury that forced Clayton Kershaw to miss his scheduled start Sunday against the St. Louis Cardinals may be even worse than first feared.
Kershaw is scheduled to meet with a hip specialist in New York on Tuesday to determine the extent of the injury. If Kershaw must undergo surgery, he isn't expected to be pitching in the major leagues until the middle of May, reports Dylan Hernandez in Monday's Los Angeles Times.
Stephen Fife filled in for Kershaw on Sunday and manager Don Mattingly was forced to use a franchise-record 10 pitchers in an eventual 5-2 12-inning loss to the Cardinals.
The Dodgers could enter spring training with three starters coming off notable injuries, a disturbing number for a franchise that is built to win now. Kershaw is under contract next season for $11 million and won't be eligible for free agency until after the 2014 season.Chad Billingsley suffered a season-ending elbow injury and Ted Lilly is scheduled to undergo a shoulder operation Friday.
