There is a 60 percent chance of rain in the nation’s capital where the Nationals host the Cubs Wednesday night. Thunderstorms will give way to showers later in the evening, dropping the temperatures into the mid 70s at Nationals Park.

-- The Giants and Cowboys kick off the start of the new NFL season but could do it without key components of their offense. Dallas tight end Jason Witten is doubtful for Wednesday after suffering a lacerated spleen in a preseason game on Aug. 13. “If I get cleared, I'm playing,” Witten told reporters this weekend. As for New York, WR Hakeem Nicks is still a question mark due to soreness in his surgically repaired foot. Giants coach Tom Coughlin told the media he expects Nicks to play.
-- The Angels will be looking to move 11 games over .500 for the first time this season. They have been denied in their previous five attempts. Los Angeles is -105 favorite in Oakland.
-- Baltimore starters have allowed just seven hits over 13 1/3 scoreless innings so far in the series with Toronto. The Blue Jays have been held off the scoresheet in back-to-back games for the first time since May 2008. The Orioles are +111 road underdogs with a total of 8 runs Wednesday.
-- New York has been held to six hits or fewer in five straight games. The over/under is 2-2-1 in that span. Wednesday matchup with Tampa Bay has a 9-run total.
-- Atlanta C Brian McCann did not play Tuesday with a sore right shoulder. His backup, David Ross, is battling a sore left side. The Braves are -210 favorites host the Rockies.
