The Los Angeles Dodgers have yet to publicly declare a salary threshold, even after taking on an additional $260 million in the August blockbuster deal that brought Adrian Gonzalez, Josh Beckett and Carl Crawford over from Boston.
Thanks to a series of injuries to the pitching staff, the Dodgers may need to deep digger into their pockets over the winter, writes Ken Rosenthal.
The Dodgers could enter spring training with three starters coming off notable injuries, a disturbing number for a franchise that is built to win now. Clayton Kershaw, who is under contract next season for $11 million, is bothered by a hip injury. Chad Billingsley suffered a season-ending elbow injury and Ted Lilly is scheduled to undergo a shoulder operation Friday.
The Dodgers also have traded away some young starters, including Nate Eovaldi to Miami in the deal for Hanley Ramirez.
Zack Greinke is the top free agent pitcher available, but Rosenthal notes that the Dodgers made no serious pitch to acquire him from Milwaukee at the July 31 deadline. A more plausible choice might be Ryan Dempster, who made no secret of his desire to land in LA before he was traded to Texas.
Another possibility would be to bring back Hiroki Kuroda, who signed a one-year, $10 million deal with the Yankees last winter.
