A's still looking for a shortstop

The trade deadline came and went without the Oakland Athletics making a major move, but it was not for a lack of effort.
The surprisingly competitive A's were looking to add a shortstop such asYunel Escobar or Stephen Drew, but the price was too high. Oakland also made a pitch for Hanley Ramirez before he landed with the Dodgers.
Many teams reportedly had interest in Triple-A Sacramento right-hander Dan Straily, who leads all of baseball in strikeouts. Assistant FM David Frost tells Susan Slusser that the trade conversations will continue in August as the A's pursue a waiver deal.
One veteran shortstop who will likely clear waivers is the Phillies' Jimmy Rollins, a native of Oakland, but his contract makes a deal difficult. Rollins is in the first year of a three-year, $33 million deal.
