The Arizona Diamondbacks designated for assignment first baseman Lyle Overbay Monday, but it appears the veteran may not be in limbo very long.
The Snakes, unable to trade him, released Overbay, but Jon Morosi of FOXSports.com tweeted that the Cincinnati Reds are expected to make a playfor the first baseman. Tuesday, Jack Magruder tweets that the Baltimore Orioles also have some interest, and now that he's a free agent he comes uber cheap -- the pro-rated league minimum might do the trick.
With Joey Votto out, Overbay can help out at first base, especially versus right-handed pitching against which he hit .305/.383/.476 this season. Once Votto returns, Morosi adds, Overbay can be used as a pinch hitter.
Left-handed hitting is something the Reds sorely need, both in their everyday lineup and on the bench. The club has been linked to outfielders Juan Pierre and Shane Victorino, both of whom could help balance the lineup and fill a need at the top of the batting order.
