In past years, the Oakland Athletics might have been willing to let Jemile Weekswork through his troubles at the major league level. But a team in the midst of a pennant race has no margin for error, and Weeks, hitting just .220 with a dismal .302 slugging percentage, was demoted to Triple-A Sacramento Tuesday.
Following Monday's acquisition of shortstop Stephen Drew, A's manager Bob Melvin will employ a platoon at second base with Adam Rosales getting the majority of starts against right-handers and Cliff Pennington playing mostly against southpaws, says MLB.com's Jane Lee.
Melvin made no guarantee that Weeks would return as a September call-up. Weeks, a .303 hitter in 97 games last season, may still be the future at second base in Oakland, but he will have to earn his way back.
