Valentine's fate

Seems everyone's been waiting for the other shoe to drop on Bobby Valentine as manager of the Boston Red Sox.
Valentine's fate has indeed been discussed by the Red Sox front office, including GM Ben Cherington, president Larry Lucchino and owner John Henry, according to the Boston Herald.
While no decision has been made -- or at least, been made public -- all signs continue to point to Valentine's tenure in Boston being one-and-done. To wit, one of the points mentioned by the club's decision-makers is that Valentine would be a lame duck if he were to be back in 2013, since his deal was only for two years.
The other thing to remember here is that, should the Sox decide to actually ditch Valentine, they would perhaps be better off hiring a replacement sooner this time around; Valentine came aboard in early December last year.
As for potential fits? There's John Farrell, who is considered the favorite, but who would also require compensation (a la Ozzie Guillen and Theo Epstein did last offseason) since he remains under contract with the Toronto Blue Jays. Others mentioned by the Herald include some candidates from last year's search, like Blue Jays first base coach Torey Lovullo, and a few new names, like Dodgers third base coach Tim Wallach or Phillies Triple-A manager Ryne Sandberg.

SF without Melky for postseason

The San Francisco Giants, who appears headed for the playoffs again, will not activate Melky Cabrerareports Andrew Baggarly of CSNBayArea.com.
Instead, the Giants will use an outfield alignment of Angel PaganGregor Blancoand Hunter Pence, plus either Xavier NadyJustin Christian or Aubrey Huff, or even two of the above.
The Giants, who enter play Friday 27-12 without Cabrera, figure to play matchup with the left fielder, but Blanco figures to get most of the time when defense is the goal.

Freese out

The St. Louis Cardinals would undoubtedly feel better about their playoff hopes with last year's postseason hero in the lineup.
David Freese, the club's starting third baseman and 2011 NLCS and World Series MVP, missed his fourth straight game with a sprained right ankle.
While Freese has had ankle issues previously, he was encouraged by how he felt prior to Friday's win over the Washington Nationals. In fact, he took pre-game batting practice, which indicates he could return soon, barring any setbacks.
Rookie Matt Carpenter, who's had a very solid season with an .840 OPS as a utility man at first base, third base and outfield, will continue to see starts at the hot corner in place of Freese. Given the circumstances, though, the Cards are certainly hoping to get Freese back sooner rather than later, not only so he can help the club hold off the Dodgers -- currently three games back for the second NL wild card -- but also to get himself ready for another big postseason.

Sunday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers

STREAKING

Yu Darvish, Texas Rangers (16-9, 3.90)

Darvish was scratched from his scheduled start on Tuesday with a stiff neck but has been sharp in September, going 3-0 with a 1.80 ERA in four starts. He struck out nine and held the Angels to one run on four hits over eight innings to earn a win in his last start on Sept. 20. The Japanese right-hander has not lost since Aug. 17 and has turned in a quality start in each of his last seven trips. Darvish is 3-1 with a 4.26 ERA in five starts against Los Angeles in 2012.

Kris Medlen, Atlanta Braves (9-1, 1.64)

Medlen will be looking to set a major league record on Sunday. The Braves have won the last 22 games the right-hander has started, tying Whitey Ford and the Yankees and Carl Hubbell and the Giants for the record. Medlen, who would start the one-game wild card playoff on regular rest Friday, has not lost since joining the rotation at the end of July. He did allow more than two runs for the first time on Tuesday, when he was reached for three runs in seven innings against Miami. Medlen has beaten the Mets twice in his last nine starts, yielding a total of three runs in 12 1/3 innings.

SLUMPING

Henderson Alvarez, Toronto Blue Jays (9-14, 4.91)

Alvarez has lost two straight starts and seven of his last nine decisions. He had strung together three straight quality starts before giving up four runs in 5 2/3 innings of a loss at Baltimore last time out. Alvarez is 0-1 with a 5.64 ERA in four career starts against New York, including three this season.

Mike Fiers, Milwaukee Brewers (9-9, 3.55)

Fiers' strong rookie season went south in September, as he is 1-3 with a 6.97 ERA in five starts this month. He hasn't made it past the fifth inning in any of those outings and gave up four runs in 4 1/3 innings in a loss at Cincinnati his last time out.

NFL Week 4 Plays

Huge card for today. Lots of factors to consider especially the real refs are back and hopefully we will get some consistency back to the game. Nothing worse than getting beat by a busted call or simply a bogus touchdown. The dogs i have listed probably win SU but the points make it an easy choice. Houston is giving up a lot of points but the level of play they keep putting out just might be worth the line.  I love the numbers i have in these teasers. All these plays were put in this morning so the lines should be close to what you see.

Good Luck

Tampa Bay at Chicago 4:05 p.m. ET

A game out of first place in the AL Central, the Chicago White Sox aren't giving up on a playoff berth.

Neither are the Tampa Bay Rays, who face an even tougher climb for the second AL wild card.

Sale is winless in his last two starts, but pitched through his mistakes against Cleveland on Monday, allowing three runs and 10 hits - matching a season high - in seven innings of a 5-4 win.

The left-hander had one of his most impressive starts against the Rays on May 28, allowing one run and three hits while striking out a career-high 15 in 7 1-3 innings of a 2-1 victory.

Tampa Bay was limited to three hits Friday and has scored only 10 runs in five games against the White Sox this year. Ben Zobrist, who accounted for Friday's run with a solo homer, is hitting .370 (20 for 54) over his last 15 games.

Matt Moore (10-11, 3.92), who is 0-4 with a 5.72 ERA in his last six starts with Tampa Bay winning just one of them, will take the mound Saturday.

Moore gave up two runs, three hits and issued two walks in 2 2-3 innings of an 11-5 win over Toronto last Saturday. The rookie left-hander departed with two on in the third and has lasted four innings or less in three consecutive starts.

Moore pitched opposite Sale in May and took the loss. He gave up a two-run homer to Adam Dunn among his four hits and struck out 10 in seven innings.

Rays are 8-1 in their last 9 overall.
Rays are 2-5 in their last 7 games following a loss.
Rays are 2-6 in their last 8 road games vs. a team with a winning record.
Rays are 1-4 in Moores last 5 road starts.
Rays are 1-4 in Moores last 5 starts with the total set at 7.0-8.5.
Rays are 1-5 in Moores last 6 starts.
Rays are 0-4 in Moores last 4 starts vs. a team with a winning record.

White Sox are 13-3 in their last 16 home games vs. a team with a winning road record.
White Sox are 2-8 in their last 10 overall.
White Sox are 4-0 in Sales last 4 home starts vs. a team with a winning record.
White Sox are 6-0 in Sales last 6 starts as a home favorite.
White Sox are 6-0 in Sales last 6 home starts with the total set at 7.0-8.5.
White Sox are 6-0 in Sales last 6 home starts.
White Sox are 4-1 in Sales last 5 starts as a home favorite of -110 to -150.
White Sox are 12-5 in Sales last 17 starts as a favorite.

Sale vs Moore truly seems like an easy play but considering how hot TB has been and how cold CHI has been we really need this game to play-out without anything crazy happening. No errors will be the key. I think Sale does his job but we got to get just a little run support. I think the Whi Sox will get this done today. Take them on the 1H and the game. Good Luck

Scherzer out a while?

Drew Smyly will start for Max Scherzer Friday, tweeted Bob NghtengaleThursday, robbing the Detroit Tigers of an opportunity to take another step toward the postseason with their best possible starter on the mound. There's no word on how long Scherzer will be out but there is time for him to make one more start in the regular season.
The club, however, isn't sure when Scherzer will return and Lynn Henning tweets that privately the team is concerned the right-hander will miss more than just a start or two.
If the Tigers make the postseason and Scherzer is unavailable, the club may go with three starters -- likely a trio of Justin VerlanderDoug Fister and Anibal Sanchez -- and if they need a fourth they could choose between Rick Porcello and Smyly. Smyly is no sure thing to make the postseason roster, however.
An MRI earlier this week revealed no structural damage in Scherzer's shoulder, so it appears the issue is short-term.

A's rotation without Anderson

The Oakland Athletics are in good position to lock up a playoff berth and if they do, their starting rotation is a bit up in the air.
Their ace, Brandon McCarthy, is out, their veteran horse, Bartolo Colon, may be able to return at some point next month and contribute and lefty Brett Anderson is dealing with an oblique strain.
Without those three, the A's playoff rotation likely will consist of Jarrod ParkerA.J. Griffin, Tom Milone and Dan Straily -- all rookies. Anderson, however, is working his way back and appears to be on target for the league division series, if the A's get that far.
Whether or not Anderson starts or is used in relief remains to be seen -- he's also coming off Tommy John surgery -- but if he does the most likely candidate to be shifted out of the rotation is Straily.

Saturday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers

STREAKING

Justin Verlander, Detroit Tigers (16-8, 2.72)

Verlander recorded his third straight victory after striking out eight in as many innings in a 6-2 triumph over Kansas City on Monday. The reigning AL Cy Young Award winner and MVP improved to 11-7 in his career versus the Twins after pitching a complete-game gem on July 4. Verlander permitted one run on four hits and struck out seven in the 5-1 victory.

Jordan Zimmermann, Washington Nationals (12-8, 2.90)

Zimmermann gave up one run over 6 2/3 innings against Milwaukee last Monday to win back-to-back games for the first time since his two starts following the All-Star break. Zimmermann, who has allowed less than three runs in four straight outings, is 7-5 with a 2.23 ERA in 15 starts on the road this season.

SLUMPING

Justin Germano, Chicago Cubs (2-9, 6.18)

Germano has taken the loss in each of his last seven starts and is running out of time to secure himself a spot in Chicago’s future. The 30-year-old right-hander has not completed six innings in any of those seven starts and is coming off an effort against St. Louis last Sunday in which he allowed four runs on 10 hits in 5 2/3 frames. Germano, who has bounced around the majors and minors over the last several seasons, has faced Arizona five times in his career, going 2-1 with a 5.24 ERA.

Roy Halladay, Philadelphia Phillies (10-8, 4.40)

Halladay had won six of his previous seven decisions before a disastrous outing against the Braves last Saturday. He lasted just 1 2/3 innings, allowing seven runs on five hits with three walks. Halladay is 2-1 in three starts against Miami with a 3.98 ERA.

Boston at Baltimore 7:05 p.m. ET

Visiting Boston tries to avoid a seventh loss in eight games Friday night when it opens a three-game set against a Baltimore team coming off its most impressive power display in 27 years.

Wednesday's victory kept the Orioles just behind New York for first place in the AL East and on top of the wild-card standings.

With six games remaining, Baltimore is trying to hold on for its first playoff berth since 1997. The Orioles took two of three at Fenway Park last weekend to improve to 10-5 against Boston (69-87), and they'll face a Red Sox team that's been outscored 43-21 during a 1-6 slump before visiting Tampa Bay following this series.

The Orioles will give the ball to Chris Tillman (8-2, 3.08 ERA), who's posted a 1.64 ERA over his last four starts while holding opponents to a .154 average.

The right-hander was sharp against the Red Sox on Sunday but didn't factor in the decision of a 2-1 loss, yielding one run and six hits over six innings. Tillman had gone 0-1 with a 5.73 ERA over his previous three career starts versus Boston.

The Red Sox are coming off a two-game sweep at the hands of the Rays, falling 4-2 on Wednesday to finish 34-47 at home - matching their worst mark since 1965.

The Red Sox haven't been very formidable on the road, either, dropping 12 of 17 by a 106-52 margin.

Boston will try to get on track behind Aaron Cook (4-10, 5.13), who's posted a 6.12 ERA over his last five outings. The right-hander gave up five runs and nine hits over 5 1-3 innings Saturday in a 9-6, 12-inning loss to Baltimore.

Cook is 0-2 with an 8.78 ERA over three starts against the Orioles this season.

Tonight we gladly take the Orioles in the 1H and the RL. Cook should get pounded as he always does and the Orioles are just hitting everything. Good Luck

Part-time play for Ethier?

Los Angeles Dodgers skipper Don Mattingly would not commit to Andre Ethier's role in 2013 and hinted that he could sit versus left-handed pitching.
Ethier does just fine against right-handers but is batting just .214 versus southpaws, .236 for his career.
"I can say all day long that I think he's capable of hitting against lefties, but if the numbers keep telling us that maybe he can't, then we have to go a different route," Mattingly said.
If the club does plan to use Ethier primarily against right-handed pitchers, they could be in the market for a platoon partner this winter.

Friday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers

STREAKING

Cliff Lee, Philadelphia Phillies (6-8, 3.18)

After winning just three starts in his first five months, Lee is 3-1 in September with a 0.99 ERA. The left-hander has struck out 21 hitters in 16 innings in his past two starts. Lee is 1-1 with a 4.63 ERA in two starts against Miami this season.

Jered Weaver, Los Angeles Angels (19-4, 2.74)

Weaver has won his last three starts to keep himself in the Cy Young Award discussion. He held the Chicago White Sox to one run over 6 1/3 innings in his last outing, setting a career high for wins. After losing his first start against the Rangers this year, Weaver has won the last three meetings to improve to 12-7 with a 3.65 ERA in 29 starts against Texas.

SLUMPING

A.J. Griffin, Oakland Athletics (6-1, 2.80)

After winning six straight, Griffin has struggled in his last two outings. The 24-year-old rookie permitted nine runs on 15 hits - including four homers - to earn a pair of early exits. Griffin pitched well in his lone outing versus Seattle, allowing one run and striking out seven in 5 1/3 innings in a 6-1 triumph on Sept. 7.

Aaron Cook, Boston Red Sox (4-10, 5.13)

Cook received a no-decision against the Orioles last Saturday despite giving up five runs and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings. He defeated Tampa Bay in his previous start to end a five-game losing skid. Cook is 0-2 with an 8.78 ERA in three starts against Baltimore, all coming this season.

Marlins sign former prospect to one-day contract

The Miami Marlins have signed former prospect Adam Greenberg, hit in the head by a pitch in his lone previous big league plate appearance seven years ago, to a one-day contract.

Greenberg, now 31 years old, will return to a major league batter's box on Oct. 2 when the Marlins play the New York Mets at Marlins Park.

As a member of the Chicago Cubs on July 9, 2005, Greenberg was hit in the head by the first pitch he saw from the Marlins' Valerio De Los Santos. After spending the remainder of the season on the disabled list, Greenberg, who suffered from vertigo following the incident, played in the minors and in independent baseball from 2006-11.

"I'm extremely proud to extend this opportunity to Adam," said Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria. "He has earned this chance as his love and passion for the game never diminished, despite his career tragically being cut short. I look forward to seeing Adam step up to the plate and realizing his comeback dream next Tuesday night."

Greenberg will donate his one-day salary to charity.

A native of Connecticut, Greenberg was selected by the Cubs in the ninth round of the 2002 draft.

The only other player to be hit by a pitch in his only big league plate appearance and never take the field was Philadelphia's Fred Van Dusen in 1955.

Sanchez on KC's radar?

Anibal Sanchez blanked the Kansas City Royals Tuesday, striking out 10 and yielding just thee hits. After witnessing such domination, Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star wonders if the Royals didn't just get shut out by a future member of their starting rotation.
Sanchez will become a free agent after the season and his recent run of strong starts can only help his case. The Royals, however, appear ready to spend on the right starting pitcher.
Other options for GM Dayton Moore's club include right-hander's Kyle Lohse, Shaun Marcum and perhaps Dan Haren if the Angels declne their options -- which they are expected to do.
Sanchez is likely to draw interest from several teams and the Detroit Tigers may consider re-signing him.

Ramos or Suzuki in '13?

Washington Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo says the club;s No. 1 catcher will remain the injured Wilson Ramos in 2013, but that there will be plenty of playing time available for Kurt Suzuki.
Suzuki was acquired from the Oakland Athletics this summer and turned his season around with the Nats. Since the trade, the 28-year-old has batted .271 with a .322 on-base mark and five home runs, all significant improvements over his time in Oakland this season.
Ramos has been on the disabled list almost the entire season, but he's expected to recover fully in time for spring training.

Thursday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers

STREAKING

Dan Haren, Los Angeles Angels (12-11, 4.35)

Haren has won back-to-back starts and four of his last five. He defeated the Chicago White in his last start when he gave up two runs and six hits in six innings. Haren’s top outing of the season was May 24 against Seattle when he struck out a career-best 14 while tossing a four-hit shutout. He is 2-1 with a 2.33 ERA in three starts against the Mariners this season. Haren is 12-6 with a 2.57 ERA in 22 career starts against Seattle.

Barry Zito, San Francisco Giants (13-8, 4.18)

After being left off the Giants’ postseason roster in 2010, Zito has secured a spot this year after a strong campaign. He held Arizona to one run in 6 2/3 innings last Saturday, and he’s 3-0 with a 3.17 ERA in his last five starts. Zito has gone 6-8 with a 5.01 ERA in 20 career games against the Diamondbacks.

SLUMPING

Travis Blackley, Oakland Athletics (5-3, 3.75)

Blackley lasted just two innings against the New York Yankees last Saturday, allowing four runs (two earned) on four hits and three walks. He is 1-1 with a 4.76 ERA in three starts against the Rangers this season. Overall, he is 2-1 with a 5.16 ERA in four career starts against Texas.

Patrick Corbin, Arizona Diamondbacks (6-7, 4.36)

Corbin turned in his shortest outing of the season last Saturday against the Rockies, giving up five runs over three innings. He’s struggled over the past month with just one win in his last six starts and a 5.91 ERA over that stretch. Corbin took a no-decision in his last start against the Giants on Sept. 3 after allowing four runs over five frames.

Angels prefer Greinke

Last month we wondered what the Los Angeles Angels might do once the offseason in regards to right-handers Dan HarenErvin Santana and Zack GreinkeAlden Gonzalez of MLB.com reports that the club plans to cut ties with Haren and Santana and push hard to re-sign Greinke.
Greinke will hit free agency after the World Series ends while both Haren and Santana have options for 2013. Santana's is for $13 million while Haren's is worth $15 million, and neither pitcher has exactly earned that kind of money this season.
Haren's track record may still earn him a multi-year deal over the winter -- he has seven straight seasons of 200 innings and a career 3.66 ERA -- but his workload and subsequent struggles this season may scare some clubs away.
Santana was battered for most of the season until his last nine starts, seven of which have been quality. His past four outings may have saved his free agency, as he's been nothing short of dominant.
Gonzalez suggests Greinke could get a 5-year deal worth about $125 million.

Ortiz's free agency

David Ortiz will once again hit free agency this offseason and once again he's expected to seek a multi-year deal, writes Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald.
Ortiz, who has spent the last month on the disabled list, was having a terrific season at the plate, including a 1.026 OPS and 49 extra-base hits and despite turning 37 this coming November could warrant another large contract, even f it's just another one-year pact.
Ortiz is earning just over $14.5 million in 2012 and whether or not the Red Sox might be willing to commit another hefty deal to Ortiz considering the other holes on the roster is unclear.
If Ortiz moves on, possible fits include the Oakland AthleticsBaltimore Orioles and Tampa Bay Rays.

No Furcal, Berkman for playoffs?

The St. Louis Cardinals are not optimistic that they will be at full strength or the postseason, reports Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, with veterans Rafael Furcal and Lance Berkman not likely to return this season.
General manager John Mozeliak said "time is not on our side," with either player. Furcal's elbow injury could linger into next season if he ultimately needs surgery and Berkman, who may consider retirement, has yet to swing a bat during his recover from knee surgery.
The Cardinals are using Allen Craig at first base and a combination of Pete Kozma andDaniel Descalso at shortstop, and it appears that will be the alignment during the postseason, too.

Wednesday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers

Streaking

Matt Cain, San Francisco Giants (15-5, 2.86 ERA)

Cain posted his fifth consecutive win on Sept. 19, when he limited Colorado to one run and four hits in eight innings. The 27-year-old, who has not lost since Aug. 6 at St. Louis, has allowed a total of four runs in 20 1/3 frames over his last three outings. Cain improved to 12-6 lifetime against the Diamondbacks when he yielded one run in five innings on Sept. 14 at Arizona.

Jarrod Parker, Oakland Athletics (11-8, 3.40 ERA)

Parker thoroughly dominated the Rangers on June 4 when he allowed one hit – an eighth-inning single to Michael Young – in eight shutout innings. He took a no-decision against the New York Yankees in his last outing when he gave up one run and six hits in eight innings. Parker has won four of his last five decisions in what has been a solid rookie campaign.

Slumping

Rick Porcello, Detroit Tigers (9-12, 4.57 ERA)

Porcello has lost his last six decisions in seven starts, but his overall ERA slightly improved. His last victory was Aug. 7. Porcello is 5-3 with a 4.50 ERA in his career against Kansas City. He gave up two runs over five innings against the Royals Aug. 30 in a loss, but beat them May 1 by allowing three runs in eight innings. Butler is 12-for-38 against Porcello.

Aaron Harang, Los Angeles Dodgers (9-10, 3.80 ERA)

Harang is looking to rebound from a rocky start last Wednesday against Washington when he allowed two runs over 4 1/3 innings. He’s 4-5 with a 3.97 ERA in 15 career games (14 starts) against the Padres. Harang tied a career high with 13 strikeouts and fanned a Dodger-record nine consecutive hitters on April 13 against San Diego. However, he hasn't won since Aug. 18 and is 3-0 in his last five starts.

Carlos Villanueva, Toronto Blue Jays (7-6, 3.88 ERA)

Villanueva will be trying to bounce back after getting crushed at Tampa Bay last Friday. The veteran right-hander was knocked around for seven runs on eight hits in just 2 1/3 innings without notching a strikeout. Villanueva has had a rough time against Baltimore twice in the last six weeks, absorbing a pair of losses while allowing a total of 10 runs in 12 1/3 innings. Chris Davis is 3-for-4 with a pair of homers off Villanueva this season.

New York at Minnesota 8:10 p.m. ET

The New York Yankees are on a roll, and their seemingly favorable schedule could eventually result in another AL East title.

Phil Hughes is looking to continue his own strong stretch on the mound, and the offense may be of some help again.

Hughes goes for a fourth straight winning start as the Yankees' bats look to continue their dominance of the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday night.

New York (89-64) has won eight of nine to move 1 1/2 games ahead of second-place Baltimore in the East race with nine games left, one more than the Orioles.

The Yankees appear to have the inside track to win the division since their remaining schedule is against three teams assured of losing seasons - Minnesota (64-90), Toronto and Boston.

Including a pair of postseason sweeps, they've won 26 of 32 games against the Twins while hitting .290 with 52 homers.

Hughes (16-12, 4.05 ERA) has certainly benefited from the Yankees' impressive production, which includes a major league-leading 229 homers. He has been backed by 5.6 runs per start this season, one reason why he owns the highest ERA of any major leaguer with at least 15 wins.

Overall, he's 2-0 with a 2.66 ERA in five games - three starts - against Minnesota.

Derek Jeter is hitting .370 during his season-high 18-game hitting streak, and he has a .365 average in his last 53 overall meetings with the Twins. The superstar shortstop has hit safely in 48 of those matchups.

Raul Ibanez is 7 for 16 in four meetings this year after getting two hits, including a solo homer Monday. He's homered three times in three games, going 7 for 12 and driving in five runs.

Minnesota, which has lost four in a row at home, is giving Esmerling Vasquez (0-2, 6.75) a fifth chance at his first victory of the season. He's failed to complete six innings in each of his past four trips to the mound.

The right-hander was chased with two outs in the sixth after surrendering three runs and six hits with three walks in Thursday's 4-3, 10-inning loss at Cleveland.

Vasquez's only meeting with the Yankees was catastrophic relief appearance in a loss with Arizona on June 22, 2010. He was roughed up for five runs while failing to manage an out in a six-run eighth.

We cashed the Yankees RL last night so let's see if we can have a repeat of yesterday. Hughes should do well as he has most of the season. NY's bats are hot right now and they have quietly won a ton of games lately. Twins on the other hand are losing...a lot - and with Vasquez back on the mound i think their chances are extremely good for yet another victory. Take the Yankees in the 1st half and on the RL tonight. Good Luck
