Soto's role in Texas

The Texas Rangers have acquired catcher Geovany Soto from the Chicago Cubs in one of two deals the Cubbies made Monday night, tweets Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports.

Soto, a former rookie of the year in the National League, figures to take over some of the catching duties in Texas and serves as insurance for the Rangers in case they lose Mike Napoli to free agency this coming offseason. Soto is arbitration eligible this winter and Yorvit Torrealba will hit free agency after the season, too.

The Rangers may not be done, as they have been linked to relief pitching, starting pitching and even outfielders. The Cubs could make several more deals, one likely including right-hander Ryan Dempster.
