The NFL filed a grievance against the NFLPA and wants suspended New Orleans Saints linebacker, Jonathan Vilma to drop his law suit against NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. As you will recall, earlier in the offseason Vilma sued Goodell in a defamation suit. However, the NFL is demanding that Vilma drop the suit on the ground that is against the collective bargaining agreement.
Vilma’s lawyer, Peter Ginsberg, is arguing that Vilma is not suing the NFL, but specifically suing Goodell. Goodell has suspended Vilma as well as other Saints’ players for their roles in the bounty scandal that took place in New Orleans. Vilma, along with head coach Sean Payton, were punished the most harshly as Goodell has suspended both for the entire 2012-13 NFL season.
Vilma insists that he had no part in any bounty system in New Orleans and that is the reason for the defamation suit against Goodell. While I do not approve of any bounty system that took place I think it is refreshing to see a player stand up the commissioner.
For years many people have seen how Goodell runs the NFL and there are not too many people that approve of him, especially Saints fans. It has been a long and tumultuous offseason for the Saints and their fans and I am sure everyone cannot wait until the season just gets started.
For Vilma he will not playing this season but it would be a nice consolation prize for him if he can win his suit against Goodell. This defamation suit is an intriguing suit because it is putting player against commissioner. This is something personal to Vilma and it is just him versus Goodell, but only time will tell if Vilma drops the suit. However, if I were a betting man I would not put any money on that happening.
Roger Goodell has a set of brass balls for sure. He's got the nerve to kick whoever he wants in the dirt and make charges as he sees fit but when the tables are turned he cries like a baby. Seriously, how can you respect someone who handles their business that way? It's simple, you don't. In my mind he has a lot of work to do to earn the respect back from many who have no faith in him anymore....some never did.
