While the Detroit Tigers are heating up at home, the Los Angeles Angels are suddenly struggling on the road.
The surging Tigers look to extend their season-best home winning streak to seven games Tuesday night against the Angels.
Quintin Berry had three hits and Brennan Boesch hit a tiebreaking two-run homer to help Detroit (47-43) rally for an 8-6 win over Los Angeles on Monday. The Tigers, who have won eight of nine overall to move within 2 1/2 games of first-place Chicago in the AL Central, trailed 5-2 before scoring six runs in their final four offensive innings.
Detroit has averaged 6.5 runs during its six-game home winning streak. It has not won seven in a row at Comerica Park since a nine-game run June 2-18, 2010.
Boesch has gone 13 for 31 (.419) with two homers and nine RBIs over his last eight games to raise his average from .231 to .249. Berry has five hits in his last two at Comerica and is hitting .338 in 18 home games this year.
Los Angeles (49-41), meanwhile, has dropped seven of 10 away from home after winning 14 of its previous 15 on the road. Torii Hunter had four hits with three RBIs and Mark Trumbo hit his 25th home run Monday, but the Angels couldn't build on Sunday's 10-8 win at Yankee Stadium.
Albert Pujols had two hits and an RBI, but flied out with a man on base for the final out Monday. He is 7 for 20 with four extra-base hits and five RBIs in his last five games.
Five of Trumbo's nine hits in his last seven contests have left the park, including two in as many games. He's hit .345 (10 for 29) with three home runs and 10 RBIs in eight career games versus Detroit.
Trumbo struck out in his only two plate appearances against scheduled Detroit starter Jacob Turner (0-0, 1.80 ERA), who will be recalled from Triple-A Toledo to make his second big league start of the season. Turner, who is 4-2 with a 3.16 ERA in 10 starts for Toledo, allowed a run and walked five in five innings of a 2-1, 10-inning win over St. Louis on June 21.
The right-hander made his major league debut last July 30, when he gave up two runs and struck out six in 5 1-3 innings of a 5-1 loss to the Angels at Comerica Park.
Los Angeles also plans to look to the minors Tuesday, when it is expected to recall Garrett Richards (2-1, 4.21) to start. The right-hander made his most recent major league start July 5, when he was roughed up for seven runs and 10 hits - three homers - in 4 1-3 innings of a 9-7 win over Baltimore.
Richards, 0-1 with a 12.46 ERA in his last two starts, is making his first appearance against the Tigers.
