General manager Sandy Alderson has a shopping list for his club this offseason and while it does not include big spending, it does include help at catcher, veteran relief assistance and an outfielder. Alderson also noted, as reported by ESPNNewYork.com's Adam Rubin, that a veteran starting pitcher is also possible.
The club could ultimately bring back Kelly Shoppach, acquired from Boston in August, to platoon with Josh Thole behind the plate, but there will be a few free agent possibilities. Among those are Gerald Laird, Russell Martin and potentially Miguel Olivo and Rod Barajas, both whom have options for 2013 controlled by their respective teams.
The Mets have decided Jeurys Familia will pitch in relief during winter ball, strongly suggesting that will be his role next season, but Alderson is planning on mixing in a veteran or two into the bullpen. Perhaps arms such as Joel Peralta, Brandon League, Casey Janssen or Jason Grilli could be a fit. Kyle Farnsworth, Jason Frasor, Luis Ayala and David Aardsma are also free agents.
As for the outfield options, Juan Pierre, Ryan Spilborghs, Delmon Young and Scott Hairstoncould be fits. The trade market could also be of help here.
Grady Sizemore could be an attractive risk-reward type option for a club like the Mets.
