Giants-Nationals Preview

Jordan Zimmermann finally found out what it's like to get some run support last time out. He'll hope for an encore Tuesday as he leads the Washington Nationals into the opener of a three-game series against the visiting San Francisco Giants. Zimmermann is one of the most undersupported pitchers in baseball, but was handed double-digit runs in his previous start and cruised to victory. He'll try to notch his first home win of the season as he opposes Giants fireballer Tim Lincecum, who is also coming off a strong start in what has been an otherwise difficult season.

TV: 6:35 p.m. ET, CSBA (San Francisco), MASN (Washington)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants RH Tim Lincecum (3-8, 5.60 ERA) vs. Nationals RH Jordan Zimmermann (4-6, 2.77)

Lincecum looked like his old self last time out, limiting the Los Angeles Dodgers to four hits while racking up eight strikeouts over seven scoreless innings. And while the Dodgers aren't exactly hitting like World Series contenders, the outcome was an important one for Lincecum as he labors through the worst season of his career. The 28-year-old has been especially vulnerable away from AT&T Park, going 1-4 with a 7.59 ERA while surrendering seven home runs over just 40 1/3 frames.

Zimmerman came into the week ranked 49th out of 62 qualifiers in run support, the main reason why he finds himself with just four victories despite posting strong peripherals. But he limited Colorado to just one run over seven innings last time out and the Nationals' offense took care of business as Zimmermann won for the first time in six starts. He's 0-3 in seven home outings but has enjoyed some success in his career against the Giants, going 2-1 with a 3.60 ERA in four starts.

WALK-OFFS

1. Lincecum was 0-6 in his previous 10 starts prior to beating the Dodgers.

2. Giants 3B Pablo Sandoval is going to the All-Star Game after emerging victorious in fan balloting. Sandoval couldn't believe he was chosen ahead of the Mets' David Wright: "He's had a great year. I'm surprised that I made it."

3. The teams come into the series virtually even in total offense. San Francisco has scored 317 runs on the season, with Washington at 316.

Under is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings in Washington.
Over is 4-1 in Lincecums last 5 starts vs. Nationals.
Under is 6-2 in the last 8 meetings.
Giants are 18-8 in the last 26 meetings.

Not really a fan of Lincecum and see no reason why we'd start playing him now.
